Foundations of Natal Astrology #3: The Signs and What They Represent
Understanding the Signs and Their Role in the Natal Chart
Given that the planets each represent a part of the psyche, the signs reveal how that part expresses itself. They tell us the manner, rhythm, and texture of how a planet responds. Each sign offers a distinct mode of operating, shaped by its elemental nature, its modality, its orientation, and its polarity (we will explain all of that). When we speak of the signs, we are not describing fixed personality traits. We are describing the style through which planets function, act, and react.
The signs never act on their own. They serve as filters and frameworks through which planetary energy is directed. A few examples will help you understand: We know that Venus is the planet of love, beauty, and attraction. Venus in Capricorn expresses itself through responsibility, containment, and endurance. Venus in Leo expresses those same needs through warmth, visibility, and a hunger for wholehearted engagement. Mars, the planet of action and assertiveness, in Virgo, pushes forward carefully and with exacting standards. Mars in Aries surges ahead through instinct and immediacy. Each sign gives a particular shape to the core impulse of the planet.
In time, you will begin to recognize the unique tempo and coloration of each sign. The more attention you give to how a planet speaks through its sign, the more attuned you become to the inner dialogue of the chart. Each planet expressing itself through a particular sign is distinct and reveals something essential about how the energy of that planet moves and what it seeks.
