Foundations of Natal Astrology #4: The Houses - Where Life Occurs
Foundations of Astrology: The Houses
This is practical series for anyone who wants to understand natal astrology. These ‘Foundations of Astrology’ posts offer clear explanations of the building blocks of natal chart interpretation: the structure of the natal chart itself, planets, signs, houses, and aspects. Whether you’re just beginning or need a review, this section is designed to support steady and confident learning of the basics. Although this material has not yet been published elsewhere, it may appear in future print or digital publications. Because it is a condition of publication, I need to keep it behind a paywall.
One of the most compelling things about astrology is the way that it gives shape to a human life. An individual’s natal chart doesn’t just show personality traits or preferences. It shows the structure of experience. It explains where the most meaningful events are likely to unfold, what areas of life are emphasized, and how different themes intersect. It gives us language for what is nearly impossible to explain or even understand: the pattern of a life being lived.
The planets in the natal chart are the internalized actors or teachers within us. The signs that these planets are in show the character that the actor is playing, or the manner and style in which the teacher relays information. The houses of the chart are where these events take place in the actual day-to-day life. They bring the symbolism and activity of the cosmos down to earth, planting it in our actual world and personal experience. These houses describe where life unfolds. They mark specific areas of activity, focus, and development. They show where the action happens. They ground our lives in the here and now, within the texture of our ordinary lives.
