In the natal chart, the 7th house is where an individual extends beyond themself, reaching toward a partner. This is where we each face the “other,” reflecting back aspects of ourselves that we may not fully recognize. Traditionally called the house of marriage, its meaning extends far beyond the romance that brings two people together. It encompasses all one-on-one relationships, business partners, close friendships, rivalries, and adversaries. Every relationship formed here, whether through love or conflict, serves as a teacher, bringing unconscious material into awareness.

Where the 12th house speaks of hidden enemies, forces that undermine us from the shadows, the 7th house reveals open enemies, those who challenge us in direct opposition. They, too, reflect a part of ourselves we may not want to claim. Whether through attraction or confrontation, every significant relationship forces us to see ourselves more clearly, offering the opportunity for growth, integration, deep understanding, and change.

We often project the qualities of the 7th house onto others, seeking in a partner what we struggle to accept or develop in ourselves. This can create cycles of attraction and disappointment, as we expect another person to complete what is missing within us, without acknowledging that which is missing.

Alchemy, in the context of the 7th house, speaks to the transformative power of relationships. Just as ancient alchemists sought to turn base metals into gold, our closest partnerships challenge us to refine and evolve aspects of ourselves that we may not want to recognize or claim.

Through love, conflict, attraction, and opposition, we are given the raw material for self-awareness.

The people we draw into our lives—whether as lovers, friends, or even enemies—act as catalysts, revealing what is hidden and pushing us toward integration. True relationship alchemy occurs when we no longer seek completion in another but instead embrace the process of becoming whole within ourselves.

The axis of the 1st and 7th houses is not about losing ourselves in another but discovering new dimensions of ourselves.
